Join us for a demonstration of the beadwork of George Blackwood
6:30 p.m., Thursday, April 25 @Overbrook Library
George Blackwood and his wife, Anne, has lived in Osage County for nearly 14 years. He is a member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma. He grew up in a community called Baron Fork, Oklahoma. Tonight he will be sharing his passion for beadwork, which he learned as a child from his Granny Babe. There are many types of Native American beadwork. George specializes in "Peyote Stitch" It is a stitch that "goes around" objects, such as pens, canes, and key chains. Peyote Stitch has a rich history, getting its name from beadwork on Peyote staffs, fans, and gourds used in Peyote ceremonies. George has expanded this art work to include pottery, gourds, and bowls. That way, he has a larger “canvas", and can more easily tell the story he wants.
